Health Dangers Of Asbestos

March 12, 2009

Mesothelioma and asbestosis are the long term result of prior exposure to asbestos. You have undoubtedly heard of asbestos, and are probably aware of its dangers. But many people are not aware as to exactly what it is and where it can still be found in the environment in which we live. Asbestos is a type of mineral fiber that used to be utilized in many products for the purpose of making them more resistant to the extremes of heat and cold. For many years asbestos was used widely by the building industry, before it was known that this material releases particles which produce mesothelioma - an aggressive form of lung cancer - when they are inhaled. Asbestos is no longer used, for this reason. There is also active controversy that some sectors of the building industry continued to exposure their workers to asbestos, with the attendant risks of asbestosis and mesothelioma long after the building industry was in...

Star Wars And Psychology: Embracing The Dark Side

January 16, 2009

A few evenings ago, some friends and I decided to watch the latest Star Wars film, Return of the Sith. This film got me thinking about a concept that is key to much of the hypnotherapy that I do, and is an excellent example of how not to lead one s life. Much of what makes the Star Wars story so alluring is the puzzling change that occurs in Anakin Skywalker. How is it that a man can turn from supremely good to the embodiment of evil. We re led to love Anakin the Jedi and hate the same man, only a few days later. It is both puzzling and troubling. What is even more puzzling and perhaps troubling is that, on the surface, it seems that Anakin s love for Padm is what leads him, ultimately, to the dark side. This is an excellent example of the way the Jung claims that the human shadow works. The shadow, according to Jung, is a huge portion of our personality that we disown. We disavow it, and lock it away. Once it...

Hiv Targets Senior Citizens

November 18, 2008

Entering her second year as a widow, my dear friend Rachael was past the several stages of grief and closing that chapter of her life; not an easy task but necessary for anyone who has survival instincts. She began dating again and I couldn t have been happier for her. Sam was like a brother in a sense; a long time friend from our college days. At first it was dinner and theater tickets but soon developed into weekends at his Lake house. Post menopausal, it didn t occur to Rachael to consider condoms. And in retrospect, she would not have asked Sam about his sexual activities there were things our generation didn t talk about. Therefore when her physician put her through a battery of tests because of her complaints regarding sudden weight loss and fatigue, she was shocked when she tested positive for HIV. How does this happen at age 64, she wanted to know. But it s a fact: anyone can get HIV AIDS regardless of...

Fear Of Flying

September 29, 2008

The plane was bouncing hard as we were starting our decent into Albuquerque. Living in Santa Fe, I ve flown in and out of Albuquerque airport a lot due to my workshop schedule. It s always bumpy. The woman sitting next to me was gripping the armrests and shaking, scared to death. I turned to her and asked her if she would like some help. She nodded. Don t worry, nothing bad is going to happen. We are safe. How do you know that. she asked. If you were to move out of what your mind is telling you that is scaring you and open to a different Source of Truth, you would know too. Your mind, which is devoted to trying to control things, is freaking out due to feeling so out of control. It s this feeling of being out of control that is scaring you. And, of course, you have no control over the plane or over the pilot. But if you tune into the real Source of Truth, which is definitely not your mind, you will know that...
